Finally the DG600 was flown for the first time, using the data included with the model (GC, control throws...). It was flown from the slope last Sunday with an ideal weather and very strong thermal actvity, using the short span version with winglets (4m). It showed as you know very good overall handling, penetrates readily, has very good slow flight behaviour and is able to turn very tight if provided with apropiate lift. The landing speed has to be adjusted very well as it builds up speed very easy, also with flaps down, which is remarkable if we bear in mind the very low overall weight (about 4500 gr). After that I decided to mix flap with the spoilers. It was almost able to be at the same height of a Solution XL flown by a keen colleague; for the first flight this is a good sign.
Next day (yesterday) the slope was almost calm. The 'test plane', again the same Solution went out beforehead and marginal lift was found with scattered weak thermals. The DG600 was fitted with the wing extensions (4800 mm) and launched from the slope. What an experience! ... It performed as expected, it was ble to fly in such marginal conditions and make use of almost every lift encountered. It is very sensible to it and the affected wing immediately raises; its low weight allows to start turning almost at the same time, is able to turn very tightly and without problems, a bonus if we keep in mind the very narrow chord of the wing tip. When time came to perform the landing, the mixing of spolers and flaps (to maximum deflection of 30º) showed a very docile slowing down and sound behaviour BUT!!! when almost touching the ground very gently something happened... The gear collapsed!! This means that as a result of MY fault I did not realise that the shaft was absolutely round and that no retaining flat portion was made beforehand and the collar of the horn slipped after this second landing. Minor bruises were all what was found and today the modifications were done. I am anxious waiting for next weekend; perhaps then we will have our tug plane ready to do some nice flights and continue the adjustments to be done to this very nice sailplane.
One thing has to be said. This model is a pure collection of masterwork. All the wing joiner area, with the spars continuing and joining into the opposite wing, as per real thing is something to be seen to be believed; it seems to work perfectly. The craftmanship is also of very good quality and the moulds have been worked to perfection in order to obtain such a result. The fitting is 'perfect' and the finish 'superior'. The cabin work and complete accesories are also outstanding. The cabin fitting is also much better than the best I could ever do. I have to congratulate sincerely the people working on this models for a very good work. Yes, it is not perfect, some bibbles under the gelcoat but that is all. Really I feel absolutely happy taking in mind the prize of this kit; a very good value.
